Cairns has some seriously hot skate parks, so if you’re looking for things to do in Cairns and love to skate or BMX, get your gear and head out to the Cairns Esplanade Skate Park!
Located on the North end of Cairns Esplanade, the skate park is arguably one of the best skate parks in Australia and at over 2000 square metres, it’s not hard to see why.
Filled with half pipes, vertical walls, corners and ramps and both big and small bowls, the skate park is nothing short of spectacular, with enough sections to keep even the fussiest of skaters happy.
The skate park also features some really long runs, so you can get some serious speed to run on ledges, rails and stairs, which is fantastic for both beginners and experts that love to shred it. Even as a spectator, the kids that skate this park are often unbelievable to watch, pulling moves with amazing precision and acrobatic skill.
There’s also plenty of session spots due to the space, so you won’t feel overcrowded or in the way if you want to skate in your own little section of the park. This is great for those learning to skate, as the park has some really nice areas just to practice before you start taking on the more advanced sections down the track.
The park is open day and night, so when the sun sets, the floodlights come on and skaters (and BMX riders) can continue on through the evening, where it cools down and you can get a little reprieve from the heat. You also have the option to swim in the lagoon a little further down the Esplanade if you want to cool off, which is a great way to chill out after a good session.
This is a great feature of the park, as evening skating can often be much less punishing than hitting the park during a hot Cairns day. Even though the park does provide shaded areas to rest between sessions, that Cairns sun can really take its toll on you, so be sure to take plenty of water.
So if you’re a keen skater or BMX rider, or you’re a parent and looking for things to do in Cairns with kids, be sure to check out the Esplanade Skate Park. The kids are friendly and everyone is there to have a good time and that… is what it’s all about!
