Travel 45 minutes by ferry and you are out on the resplendent shores of one of the most popular islands off the Cairns coast. Your destination… Fitzroy Island, a national park diverse with landscapes of rainforests, mangroves, golden beaches and unspoilt coral systems.
Sitting only 25 km east of Cairns, Fitzroy Island is absolutely brimming with wildlife and natural wonders, giving visitors the opportunity to partake in a large range of activities around this sizeable tropical island. In fact there are so many activities and things to do you will be hard pressed to get them all done in a single day.
After that unforgettable diving experience? Fitzroy Island is considered to be a top location for those looking to snorkel, dive and even kayak the waters of the Great Barrier Reef. Coral beaches can be found all around the island giving visitors the opportunity to explore a range of hot spots without the crowds. Reef systems surrounding the island are rich with tropical sea life and the sparkling waters often give great visibility, so be sure to take an underwater camera to capture that cute clown fish or even an elusive Green Sea Turtle. Whales are also known to frequent the island when migrating along the coastline, which make for a truly unforgettable experience.
Head into the island and you will have the opportunity to select from a range of walking tracks and lookouts, allowing visitors to explore rainforests, deep valleys, fresh water springs and meet some of the local wildlife along the way. The island itself has some highly elevated lookout spots but for a fantastic lookout, it is recommended to take on Lighthouse Road, a 2 hour walk to through rainforest to the resident and operational lighthouse, providing stunning 360 degree views of the coastline and surrounding reefs. Secret Garden Track and Nudey Beach Track (which leads to the most popular swimming beach on the island) are also very popular.
Due to the islands close proximity to Cairns and large range of activities, Fitzroy island is ideal for those looking for things to do in Cairns with kids, those looking for a romantic day out or even visitors on the hunt for adventure and exploration.
