Malanda Falls

Out on the Atherton Tableands or looking for things to do in Cairns? Malanda Falls could well be your day out if you’re looking for something special.

The Atherton Tablelands are abound with natural beauty and hot locations that can leave the imagination running wild and Malanda Falls is no exception.

Located in the heart of the Malanda township, Malanda Falls are quite a picturesque sight to behold. Fed by the cool, fresh waters of the North Johnstone River, the falls themselves are comprised of ancient basalt lava flows, surrounded by pristine rainforest and beautifully landscaped surrounds.

Feeding into the pool below, the falls provide a fantastic location for safe freshwater swimming for most of the year (except during the wet season) and are quite popular with families due to the calmness and shallow areas around the pool area, which provide an ideal environment for young children to play in the waters.

Surrounding the pool, visitors are able to relax on the sandy shores of the banks or even the tiered grassed levels that give Malanda Falls that unique Colosseum feel, without the crowds.

In the park area itself, picnic areas are provided, making this location a top spot for those wanting to make a day of it with a lunch, swim and wander around the conservation park located across the road. Although the BBQ facilities are provided, wood is not provided, so you will need to bring your own firewood or grab some from a local petrol station or corner shop that sells it.

Malanda Falls also comes with an interesting history. Owned by the Ngadjon-Jii, who call it Tutamonlin, Malanda falls comes with a rich history, of which can be learned by visitors at the local information centre, or as they walk around the rainforest trails.

So the next time you’re thinking about venturing out to the Tablelands, why not check out Malanda Falls. A great site to relax, swim, explore and learn about the rich culture and history of the local Aboriginals in the region.
