With so many tours and such a huge selection of things to do in Cairns, there is one experience that has been constantly popular with visitors. Skyrail.
Located 15 minutes drive out of town at Caravonica (right next door to the equally famous Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park), Skyrail is considered one of “the” premium activities for tourists looking to experience something different in Cairns.
Operating since 1995, Skyrail Rainforest Cableway will take you on a magnificent journey, spanning over 7.5 kms over lush tropical rainforest, past the stunning waterfalls at Barron Gorge and finally arriving at the lovely rainforest village of Kuranda.
Along the way your first stop is Red Peak Station, which provides a 175 metre boardwalk through the rainforest, giving visitors an opportunity to explore the rainforest with ease. Skyrail also provide guided tours throughout the day, which are a great way to learn about the ecosystem.
The second stop is the Barron Falls Station. Witness the spectacular views of Barron Gorge as you take in the sheer monstrous size of these falls. We highly recommend you view the falls during the wet season (Summer) as this is generally when the rapids are running the fastest (and the heaviest). Barron Falls Station also houses a Rainforest Interpretation Centre, an interactive centre where visitors can utilise state of the art facilities to learn more about the wonders of the beautiful surrounding rainforest.
On final arrival you will arrive at Kuranda, of which you can learn more about here, where you can stroll through the lovely village and markets, grab a bite to eat and even enjoy some of the local wildlife parks.
Skyrail is truly an unforgettable experience, as viewing the rainforest and the regions of Cairns from such a height is nothing short of breathtaking. In some parts of the trip, you are barely just skimming over some of the rainforest canopies, bringing you so close to the wonders of these ancient lands. If you’re lucky, you may even get a glass bottom gondola, which takes the experience to a whole other level.
Now, as memorable as this day will be for you, we have a few tips to help you on your journey.
Tips and Tricks
Try to book your Skyrail tour for the departure times between 10:00 am – 11:00 am. These are the least busy times that we have experienced.
We don’t advise Skyrail for people that don’t like heights. The gondolas can get some serious air time.
It can get busy. Sometimes the lines to access the gondolas are ridiculously long, which can put a tarnish on the experience. Pick your times.
Pick a fair weather day. If the weather conditions turn dangerous, you could find yourself stranded in mid air. Possibly for hours.
Pack water. It can get super humid and you will need to keep hydrated.
Charge that camera. You’re going to go crazy with the photos.
