Looking for things to do in Cairns with a great wildlife experience? The Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas is a top spot if you’re after a day of getting up close and personal with some friendly “locals”.

Located in Port Douglas, Wildlife Habitat is a well known Cairns attraction, providing visitors with a great opportunity to view (and often touch) a huge range of Australian flora and fauna.

Set on over 8 acres, the zoo is segmented into three zoned areas, the Grassland Habitat, Wetland Habitat and Rainforest Habitat. This diversity of habitats allows visitors to be exposed to a broad range of animals, including many different species of indigenous wildlife.

Stroll along the maze of board walks as you encounter countless species through spectacular wetland and tropical habitats of the park, with many opportunities to hand feed some of the resident wildlife, such as the brilliant Eclectus Parrot.

For those that enjoy reptiles, there are plenty of lizards, crocodiles and pythons to visit along the way, with interactive presentation held throughout the day.

Finally, there is the grasslands, which give you a great opportunity to pat some friendly wallabies and kangaroos, or even get the rare opportunity to check out the mysterious Tree Kangaroo. You may even get lucky and see some kangaroo or wallaby joey’s hanging out of their mother pouches. Just beware of feeding the ducks when in the grasslands. They can get somewhat “bossy” when it comes to demanding food and are seasoned ambushers!

If you’re hungry, check out the Curlew Cafe, which also holds daily events such as “Breakfast with the Birds” and “Lunch with the Lorikeets”.

Both events are very popular with visitors, as the birds are quite interactive and like to hang around the tables as you eat. All the birds are very tame, which allows you to hand feed them. They’ve even been know to grab a bit of food off your plate. Just remember, bookings are essential for these daily events.

Yes, the Wildlife Habitat at Port Douglas is a great day out for all, especially for those looking for things to do in Cairns with kids. So if you’re thinking about visiting a special place in Cairns, be sure to check out Wildlife Habitat. A diverse and relaxing wildlife experience.
