Markets are a great day out for all and amongst the most popular things to do in Cairns, especially if you are looking for a slow paced day of relaxation and exploring. One market of note is Kuranda Markets, a must do for anyone visiting Cairns or living in Cairns.
Founded in 1978 by a small group of hippie artists and local craftsman, the markets have now grown into a colourful selection of local stalls, providing locally produced fashions, gemstones, indigenous art, homoeopathic foods, hand made jewellery and food such as tropical fruits, nuts and honeys.
The Original Markets are predominately for local craftsman and artisans and walking through there you will see some very fascinating and beautifully crafted pieces. We recommend the Kuranda Original Markets if you are interested in a real look into the local alternative community and lifestyle. The Original Markets are open every day from 9.30 am to 3.00 pm.
The Heritage Markets differ a little from the Heritage Markets and although not as old, they do not compromise age for quality. Geared more for the tourist demographic, the Heritage Markets provide stalls that sell hand made indigenous products (leather, fur, arts, boomerangs and didgeridoos), fashion, jewellery and entertainment.
You can also pop into a few of the local wildlife parks in the markets, including Bird World, Koala Gardens and the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary. Just make sure you wash your hands after handling some of the wildlife, because you’re probably going to get hungry and the Heritage Markets sport a few snack bars, cafes and the famous Frogs Restaurant (of which we highly recommend).
In regards to keeping the young ones happy, we recommend the Heritage Markets for those looking for things to do in Cairns with kids. They provide a more interactive experience, especially if the kids are keen on wildlife. The Heritage Markets are open every day from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm.
