Browsing markets is a popular thing to do in Cairns. Cairns has a a few markets in its region and there are a few more to find if you are willing to take a little scenic drive. Mareeba Markets comes to mind for one that you should visit.
The markets (held in Mareeba at Centenary Park next to the Heritage Museum) provide a good couple of hours for those that like to take a nice stroll and browse through the stalls, of which provide a solid amount of arts and crafts, second hand goodies, fruits, vegetables, food and countless little nick nacks. We recommend the local honey. Yum!
For the kids, there is the local playground and on occasions, you will often encounter novelty activities for the kids such as pony rides. There’s even the odd live poultry for sale, so the kids can get a good look at some farm animals on most occasions.
The Mareeba Markets do not operate every weekend though. They are open every second and fifth Saturday of each month, so make sure you get your dates right or you may arrive to an empty park.
Mareeba is a beautiful little town as well, so even when you’re done with the markets you can head into the centre of the town and have a look around at the shops. No crowds and very chilled out. That’s what it’s all about right?
So head up to Mareeba Markets if you feel like a great day out with friends, family or the kids. Plenty to do and a good day out for all.
