Green Ant Cantina is a funky and casual restaurant / bar with a whole lot of character. Located at 183 Bunda St, Cairns (behind Cairns Central Shopping Centre), Green Ant Cantina serves large, affordable, tasty pub style meals with a modernised Mexican theme and is considered a popular Cairns attraction (especially for backpackers).
Chill out in one of the booths or outdoor areas and sip delicious cocktails while you lounge about to some cool alternative tunes. Want something different? Try the Thai Buckets with some friends, or even some of their own selections of Green Ant brews?
Hungry? Try the delicious nachos or fajitas. We’re also big fans of their baby back ribs and chilli fries. If you’re an adventurous soul, you may be wanting to “spice” things up a bit?
Enter the Green Ant Cantinas trademark dish, the “Wings of Death”. Chicken wings doused in sauce made from some of the hottest chillies on the planet. This is not for the light hearted and many will not be able to get through more than two pieces of chicken, however if you do make it, you get your picture taken to go up on the wall of fame, plus a free jug of their home made Green Ant beer to wash it down.
Tips and Tricks
If you decide to take on the “Wings of Death”, make sure you wash your hands before going to the bathroom. This is advice from those that have done it and is directed at the males. WASH YOUR HANDS before going to pee!!!
If you take on the challenge, be prepared for the hottest chilli you have ever tasted in your life. These chillies are extraordinarily hot, so we recommend that if you are going to go for it, perhaps try them without the challenge, as the challenge entails no drinks and no sour cream.
When you’re chilling at Green Ant Cantina, you will also notice that there is quite a broad selection of characters. You do get your backpackers, especially on the two for one Tuesdays, however what is really remarkable about this restaurant is the interesting people you will meet. We never seem to not find someone interesting at Green Ant. It seems to draw a certain type of person, in a good way.
