Mareeba Drive-In

Looking for some nostalgic entertainment or old school things to do in Cairns? Maybe you should think about checking out Mareeba drive-in? A real blast from the past!

Australian drive ins are a dying breed, with only a handful still operating in the country. What were once a popular hang out on a Friday or weekend are now considered a walk down memory lane for many, hence why the Mareeba drive-in continues to be a relatively unknown Cairns attraction.

Built by Far Northern Theatres in the 1960’s and operating until 1998, the Mareeba drive-in re-opened in 2002, much to the liking of locals, T-Birds and Pink Ladies alike. With a 300 car capacity, Mareeba drive-in plays all of the current cinematic blockbusters and even serves up an old school menu. Treat yourself to some delicious drive-in cafe food, such as burgers, hot dogs, milk shakes, fries and all the classic drive-in movie snacks.

Located on the Kennedy Highway in Mareeba, the drive-in is open every Friday and Saturday, with the cafe and gates opening at 6.30 pm and movies kicking off at 7.30 pm. When it comes to things to do in Cairns with that “decades ago feel”, you just can’t beat a good old fashioned drive-in. So what are you waiting for?

This was certainly a blast from the past. It was a real honour to go to one of these drive ins. Brings back really good childhood memories.
